Ludlow Valve Mfg. Co. - Troy, NY
List 75s - Part 1 (no logo on the barrel)

  "early List 75" model?
This model is a mystery to FH.O. It's appearance, especially the bonnet style, suggests the early version of the List 75 model. However it differs from the List 75 in the following ways:
  • A SEPT 1874 patent date is cast on top of the bonnet.
  • The fluted barrel is tapered like the Patent model.
  • It has no horizontal "ropelike" band around the barrel below the nozzles; just the one above the nozzles.
  • It has a large vertical rib on the back side of the barrel.

      List 75 - 2 inch model
This small hydrant bears no resemblance to the common List 75; but is listed as a 2" No. 75 Hydrant in a 1940 Ludlow catalog.

      List 75 with Monitor Outlet
This hydrant configuration was offered in 3" V.O. with a single 2½" nozzle and also in a 4" V.O. with either one or two 2½" nozzles. Company literature from 1921 refers to this as a List 76 model with Water Crane Attachment; yet a 1940 catalog refers to this same drawing as a List 75.

      List 75
The main valve of a List 75 is of a slide gate design. This highly successful model enjoyed a production run of approximately 70 years!

There is a bewildering variety of sizes, nozzle configurations, and barrel logos of the List 75 model. What follows is our attempt to sort this out in an understandable fashion.
  • These many different List 75s are best separated by barrel details; particularly details of the Ludlow logo (or lack thereof). This large amount of information is spread over 4 pages, i.e. Parts 1, 2, 3, and the internally gated (called Multiple Valve). Within each "barrel detail" group that follows the hydrants are presented in increasing size and with the various nozzle configurations.
  • Hydrant sizes are listed by barrel I.D. with the two most commonly found sizes being 5¾" and 7". The table below lists other hydrant dimensions to better help one ascertain hydrant size of those still in service:

  • Most List 75s are of a one piece barrel design. Late production had a two piece bolted flange barrel design. A final model refinement was the List 75-0 which has a different looking bonnet.
  • One of three different patent dates can be found on the bonnets: FEB 3, 1880  JUN 24, 1884  APR 2, 1912.
Bonnets can also be found with no patent date present ... it is assumed that these are later production than those with patents. However, since the bonnets are interchangeable for the 70+ years of production the bonnets are not a safe way to determine vintage of the barrel they are bolted to. Many have been switched/replaced during rebuild of these long lived hydrants.
  •   List 75: no logo on barrel
  • The earliest version of the List 75 has no wording cast onto the 1 pc. barrel; including no logo. Slightly later a patent date of JUN 24, 1884 was added on the the barrel just below the bonnet. The presence or absence of this barrel patent date, when known, is indicated with each hydrant shown below.
  • The appropriate bonnet for this group of List 75s may be the FEB 3, 1880 patent date.
  • This group of List 75s and those in Part 2 differ from later versions shown in Part 3 in that they have two 'nut pockets' in the upper barrel below the bonnet.
