| James Flower, Bro. & Comp'y Flower Valve Mfg. Co. Flower Stephens Mfg. Co. - Detroit, MI Little is known about these companies at this time. We speculate that they were the precursors of Roe Stephens Mfg. Co., also of Detroit, MI. From an envelope dated 1893 it is established that the company was called James Flower, Brother & Company, engineers and machinists, manufacturers of the celebrated Flower patent stop valve; fire hydrant, and noiseless check valves. A Detroit spec hydrant dated 1919 has been found with the name Flower Valve Mfg. Co. on it, indicating an evolution in the company name. US Patent number 196000 was issued to James Flower of Detroit for a hydrant design that allowed a frost jacket type hydrant to be set with the nozzles facing in any desired direction. Following this, John W. Flower, also of Detroit, was awarded a hydrant patent in 1925, which was assigned to Michigan Valve Foundry & Engineering Co of Detroit, for a double mainvalve high pressure hydrant.
