US Pipe and Foundry - Chattanooga, TN
U.S. Pipe started out as Chattanooga Foundry and Pipe Company in 1882, becoming U.S. Pipe in 1899. U.S. Pipe did not manufacture fire hydrants until 1966, when the company acquired the assets and business of A.P. Smith Manufacturing of East Orange, NJ. A.P. Smith had been making fire hydrants since 1896. Hydrant production moved to Chattanooga, TN in 1970. In 2006, U.S. Pipe acquired the Mueller Company via their parent company, Walter Industries. U.S. Pipe's hydrant production ceased in 2007 with the formation of Mueller Water Products Inc., a publicly traded company formed from the former Mueller Company and U.S. Pipe. See also A.P.   'Series S' 2 Piece Barrel "Protectop flange" model
These Series S (formerly called O'Brien) hydrants with the breakable 2 pc. clamp arrangement at the flange joint with the trademark name of "Protectop" flange were previously made by A.P. Smith.

We are uncertain of the model designation of these newer hydrants. They have a tamper proof bonnet and cap design.
  • With #2180 there is no recess in the bonnet for the two bonnet bolts like the above model; but rather the bonnet is secured with bolts through the barrel flange into tapped holes in the bonnet.

    The O'Brien high pressure model continued to be manufactured after U.S. Pipe bought A.P. Smith. We are unsure of the model name associated with the smooth barrel hydrant shown below.

      H200 Series and Sentinal models
  • The H205 model that was made A.P.Smith has a fluted barrel and bonnet like the earlier O'Brien model. The H205 model shown below made by US Pipe has a smooth bonnet and barrel. Hydrants dated 1974 - 1981 have been documented. FH.O does not know the difference between the identical looking H200 and H205 models.
  • The Sentinal model has the same "Protectop" flange seen on the O'Brien model at the top of the page.

      Metropolitan 250 model
    Note that the standard Met 250 has a smooth barrel that is tapered; whereas the Met 250 Model 94 has a smooth straight (non-tapered) barrel.
  • Both have the "Protectop" flange.
  • Made in two valve opening sizes; 4½" and 5¼".

      Mueller Centurion Clone
    This model is very similar to the Mueller Centurion, with minor stylistic differences. Parts are believed to be interchangeable with the Mueller hydrant. The parent company of U.S. Pipe now owns the Mueller Company. The future of this model is unknown.
