Hi-Pressure, Special, and Flush Models

This page has the 'other' R.D.Wood models.

Standard & High Pressure (Internally Gated) Hydrants
This grouping consists of independently gated hydrants with the operating nuts for these gates in the bonnet. Some are high pressure hydrants. The model designations for these are unknown at this time to FireHydrant.org. Other R.D. Wood pages also have independently gated hydrants where the operating nut for each gate projects horizontally out the barrel wall.

This first group is of a 1 piece barrel design.

  Special
On this model "Special" is cast onto the back side of the hydrant. It may have originally been designed in response to a city specification; likely the Chicago Spec. This model enjoyed sales all over the U.S.A.; in both large cities and small towns.
  • Brand, model, V.O. size, and date are contained within an inverted triangle on the back side of the bonnet/upper barrel.
  • This model was produced in the 1940s and is often found at WWII era military installations in the USA.
  • The tall barrel version below (#1499) may have been made as a 'traffic' version of the "Special" model.
