The outward appearance of the hydrant pictured here, dated 1918, is quite similar to Birdsill Holly's patented model of 1869. Note that the operating nut on this example protrudes through the bonnet; in the patent description and on some examples of Holly hydrants, the operating nut is recessed for security purposes.
