Fairbanks Morse & Company - Chicago, IL Fairbanks-Morse was founded by Thaddeus Fairbanks, in the state of Vermont, as a maker of cast iron plows and iron stoves. Incorporated as the E & T Fairbanks & Company, the company had great success as a maker of platform scales. Charles Hosmer Morse opened a branch office in Chicago, Illinois, purchased a windmill company by the name of Wheeler, and by the late 1800s the company had been renamed Fairbanks-Morse. The company further expanded their range into gasoline and diesel engines, and also became an industrial supplier, with a huge catalog of diverse items, including plumbing supplies, and the fire hydrant shown here; Fairbanks-Morse would go on to achieve great fame as the makers of opposed cylinder diesel locomotive and marine engines.
